Adjustable Bed

An adjustable bed is also known as an electric bed, a medical bed or a semi-fowler bed.  They can be adjusted to suit the comfort needs of the person using them.  This can be very useful for people who are required to sleep in a certain position due to medical conditions, or for those that have to spend extensive periods of time in bed.  However, more and more people now purchase adjustable beds for the sheer comfort, allowing them to sleep in a position that is comfortable for them.

The Benefits of an Adjustable Bed

There are many benefits to adjustable beds, including the high level of comfort they provide to those who like to watch telly or read a book in bed before going to sleep.  Of course they are also beneficial for people who experience high levels of stress, physical discomfort or strains on the body too.  An adjustable bed is adjusted in such a way that offers the highest levels of comfort for each individual.

Another great benefit of adjustable beds is that they are built to last and can support very heavy weights, making them ideal for people who suffer from obesity issues.  Adjustable beds are also available for children and these will generally come with railings on either side to ensure that a child is not able to fall out of bed.

Styles of Adjustable Beds

There are two main styles of adjustable beds, which are:

  • Standard
  • Heavy duty

Basically, the two main parts of an adjustable bed are the base and the mattress and the base can either be standard or heavy duty, heavy duty meaning that it can support extensive use and heavy weights.  There are also many features for adjustable beds, including:

  • Different sizes – single, double, queen, king
  • Different mattresses – latex, memory foam, spring

It is important, however, that your adjustable bed has a mattress that has been designed for these types of beds, as it needs to be able to fold into the shape you find most comfortable, as well as be able to reshape into a straight form when you place the bed in a fully horizontal position.  Specific bedding – in particular fitted sheets – also needs to be purchased to ensure the sheets do not pop off the mattress or create uncomfortable air bubbles.

Adjustable Bed Settings

There are many different settings on adjustable beds.  The standard settings include:

  • Being able to raise the headrest
  • Being able to raise the foot end
  • Being able to raise and lower the bed itself

In essence, a standard adjustable bed is able to fold into a v shape.  However, more advanced models are now also available, that can bend in far more places, including the thighs and calves, making more of a wave shape.  Additional features on more advanced models of adjustable beds include a massage feature, which is more than simple luxury, as it has been scientifically demonstrated that massages aid circulation and tissue strain.

As you can see, having an adjustable bed almost guarantees a good night’s sleep and the ability to wake up rested and rejuvenated, ready to face another day.
